Frequently Asked Questions
After the large parcel in Jessup was identified as a high quality source of construction aggregate by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in the late 1980s to early 1990s, the Savage Stone team embarked on a 15+ year feasibility process with local, state, and federal regulators; most importantly—the local community! Here are some of the most frequently asked questions.
Savage Stone is a quarry owned and operated by a local Howard County family that has been in the construction materials industry for over 40 years and participated in local development for much longer.
Savage Stone was developed in 2004, began limited production in 2005, and began full production in 2006.
Savage Stone produces crushed stone (also known as aggregate) which is used in stream restoration, erosion & sediment control, bio-retention ponds, and landscaping. Construction of highways, driveways, sidewalks, homes, schools, and hospitals all require crushed stone. Even electric, water, sewer, septic systems, and gas lines need aggregate as bedding and backfill.
A half dozen calibrated and certified seismographs monitored by a qualified 3rd party measure every blast and all results are submitted to the state. Environmentally water trucks, sweeper trucks, and water spray dust suppression systems are utilized throughout the site and are inspected for proper function by state and federal regulators.
Quarries need a large parcel of land, and that land must also be underlain by sufficient quality of rock, and that location must be close to the population that will uses it. Savage Stone, in particular, is one of the last locations of accessible near-surface rock before geography transitions to sand along what is known as the Atlantic Seaboard Fall Line. In addition to supplying the local need, Savage Stone also supplies areas south and east that do not have an available rock resource.
In-place rock must be broken down first by blasting so it can be picked up by machinery and moved to crushers that farther break down material before it is of the correct size for the consumer. Savage Stone would not be able to supply the local need without blasting the rock.
